Ginori 1735 Gio Ponti plate archaeological walk black background 33 cm

In this decoration, the architect Gio Ponti recovers the classicistic inspiration of the Manufacture, which evokes the eighteenth-century taste of the travelers of the Grand Tour, but presumably also refers to the route, inaugurated in 1918, at the excavations of Rome and indicated as Archaeological Walk.

The illustration, a pendant with The Classic Conversation, debuted on the occasion of the 1923 Monza Biennale, but only since 1924 is it intended for decorating dishes. The decoration, which is combined with the contemporary Gentile Activities, shows figures that find their spatial dimension thanks to the perspective given by the tiled floor on which they move. They are symmetrically arranged in intervals, marked by architectural elements, which recall the ancient art and which clarify the name. Today, the Richard Ginori Manufacture offers this decoration in both variants designed by Ponti, with a white background and a black background, to be still made with the decal technique that is applied in a single time. In particular, the specimen with a white background highlights the capacity of the Manufacture, because it is composed of two decals that must perfectly overlap in order to create the highlight in gold of both the dark blue silhouettes and the flooring. After the decal is fired, for both decorations, proceed with the gold thread made by brush.
